Side impact restraint device

The device has a gas bag (14) unfolding between a lateral structure of a vehicle and an occupant (20a). The bag includes an outflow opening (24) arranged in a region of the bag facing the occupant. Vertical position of the outflow opening is selected, so that the opening is not covered by an upper body of the occupant. A fabric piece is arranged on the outer side of the gas bag over the outflow opening.
