The method involves determining elastic vertical force exerted by a coil spring (7), a stabilizer bar (8), an elastic stop (10) between a sprung mass and a wheel support based on vertical displacement between the sprung mass and the wheel support. Force required by a suspension actuator is calculated based on a set vertical force and the elastic vertical force exerted between the sprung mass and the support. An independent claim is also included for a suspension device for a motor vehicle.
