Method for increasing the waste gas temperature of internal combustion engines, especially those used to drive motor vehicles, comprises applying a stress so as to reach the regeneration temperature required by at least one component of the waste gas after-treatment device. The new feature is that the stress is generated by activating at least one brake and/or starter element.
