The method involves determining a value of maximum admissible load of an engine based on speed and operating parameter of the engine from cartography to control operation of the engine. The parameter is chosen from a differential pressure level between upstream and downstream of a particle filter (22) and a variable representative of back pressure level generated by loading state of the filter. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
