The gear control system, in an automobile drive transmission, has an input (2) to give the gear setting with a display (4). The control unit (1) converts the input signals into gear control signals. The visual display can call up a number of gear control functions (31-34) and/or set their parameters (P01-P16). The input has a knob (5), which can be pressed and rotated, or it is a touch screen or an eye movement sensor. The system has a learning function (MM1) from the driver's gear changing pattern, which reverts to a standard mode for a new driver.
