A locking devices may include a striker (46) and a locking mechanism (21). The locking mechanism may include a base plate (22) having a slot (24) that can receive the striker (46), a latch (26) rotatably attached to the base plate (22), a pawl (30) rotatably attached to the base plate (22), and a cam member (40) rotatably attached to the base plate (22). The locking mechanism includes a force transmitting path for transmitting a force that urges the locking mechanism in a locking condition to be disengaged from the striker. The force transmitting path passes through the cam member and includes a force interrupting portion (40b) positioned therein. The force interrupting portion (40b) is arranged and constructed to interrupt the force transmitting path when the force exceeds a predetermined value.
