In an internal combustion engine (10), fuel is added to exhaust gas from a fuel adding valve (46) to increase the temperature of a catalyst bed of a PM trapping filter (26). The amount of fuel to be added to exhaust gas is corrected in accordance with the amount of particulate matter accumulated in the PM trapping filter (26). Therefore, the catalyst bed temperature is increased through a temperature increase process in a suitable manner.
