Starter for an internal combustion engine

The drive unit includes components (42, 50) sliding axially relative to each other and coupled together. When the starter pinion is braked between the gear ring and the frictional forces acting on it, an engagement spring is further preloaded. Because the engagement unit mass is reduced, the pinion is very rapidly accelerated into mesh with the ring gear on tooth/gap alignment.
