Variable leverage brake pedal linkage mechanism

DRIVE December 1, 2004
Source
The mechanism has a drive link (20) that is pivotally mounted to a stationary support. A booster operating rod (18) is connected at one end to a brake booster and at an opposite end pivotally to the drive link. A pin and slot connection (24,26) is provided between overlapping portions of the drive link and a brake foot pedal. The drive link extends in a traverse direction to the brake pedal in a rest position of the pedal. The drive link extends over the brake foot pedal at a point intermediate the ends of the pedal so that the brake pedal and the drive link have the partially overlapping portions. An independent claim is also included for a method of actuating a booster operated brake system with a pivotally supported brake pedal so as to exert greater leverage as the brake pedal is advanced from a rest position.
