A method for operating a multi-stroke combustion engine provided with electronically controlled intake and exhaust valves, the method comprising the steps of: providing a set of different stroke operating modes, assigning a combustion frequency number Ni to each different stroke operating mode, said combustion frequency number indicating the number of strokes performed by a piston in a combustion cycle of said engine.
