In a battery (1) which has a terminal portion (6) provided at the upper end of a pole (5) extended upward from an electrode plate assembly (3) housed in a battery case (2) so as to project up from the top face of the battery case (2), the pole (5) is constructed in a double-tube structure in which a shaft portion (9) is pressed into an external tube portion (8) so as to be capable of being contracted when subjected to a large load exerted from above, so that the downward displacement of the terminal portion (6) is activated relatively easily by the pole (5) being contracted when a large load is exerted on the terminal portion (6) from above.
