The engine (20) has an engine block that has no further internal passages extending between a camshaft cavity and a crankshaft cavity (91). The engine block includes integrally formed cylinder (22) and cylinder head (24). An interconnected crankshaft (42) is disposed in the crankshaft cavity for connecting a rod (92) and a piston (46) assembly. An overhead camshaft (40) and valve assemblies (67,68) are disposed in the camshaft cavity. A pair of valve stem bores extends through the engine block between the camshaft cavity and crankcase cavity. The valve assemblies include valve stems disposed in the stem bores.
