Electromagnetically coupled integrated power and cooling unit

An apparatus (10) for providing environmental control, secondary power and emergency power for an aircraft, comprises a cooling turbine (12) coupled to a first electromechanical machine rotor (18), and including an input (14) for receiving compressed air or ram air, and an output (16) for discharging cooled air or exhaust air; a compressor (24) coupled to a second electromechanical machine rotor (26), and including an input (30) for receiving engine bleed air or ambient air, and an output (32) for discharging compressed air; means (20) for magnetically coupling the first and second rotors; a power turbine (42) coupled to the compressor (24); a heat exchanger (50) connected between the compressor output (32) and the cooling input (14); and a control unit (56) for controlling the magnetic coupling between the first (18) and second (26) rotors.
