The engine has a combustion chamber(s) bounded by a cylinder head and piston divided into cylinder head- and piston-side volumes. The head has at least 2 inlet gas exchange valves and at least 1 exhaust valve, ignition and injection devices. A piston surface has a concave region and a transition to a raised region. The concave region has a spherical section and a substantially flat surface and a piston-side volume component of 40 per cent at most. The engine has at least one combustion chamber bounded by a cylinder head and a piston (1) and divided into a cylinder head- and piston-side volumes. The cylinder head has at least two inlet gas exchange valves and at least one exhaust valve, an ignition device and an injection device between the valves. A piston surface on the combustion chamber side has a concave region (2) and the side remote from the injection valve has a transition to a raised region. The concave region has a spherical section and a substantially flat surface (3) with a center of area (5) between the ignition device and the injection valve and a piston-side volume component of 40 per cent at most.
