The method involves adjusting closing timing of the inlet valve to control the value of lambda from cycle to cycle by: measuring a lambda value and determining a required change of the lambda value for a subsequent combustion cycle; generating an adjustment signal for adjusting IVC timing for a subsequent cycle based on the required change of the lambda value; determining if IVC timing will occur early or late with respect to a switching point at which maximum filling of the cylinder is achieved for said subsequent cycle, and changing the polarity of said signal if the signal causes a switch between early and late IVC timing. The invention further relates to a computer readable storage device having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a computer to operate an internal combustion engine.",
