The engine has a fuel injector (6) fixed on a cylinder head (2) to inject fuel into a combustion chamber of a cylinder (5). The injector has fuel injection orifices arranged such that fuel jets (61) are directed towards peripheral surfaces (22) of the chamber. The peripheral surface at the lower side (24) is situated in a withdrawal position towards the cylinder axis (51) with respect to a lateral surface (52) of the cylinder.
