The safety bar assembly consists of an interchangeable cross-member (24) and connectors (28) for attaching the assembly to a motor vehicle structure. It also has an adapter (26) for fitting to the shape of the vehicle, and the connector contains a plastic material. The cross member can be in the form of a beam or a reinforced plate, and the lengthwise dimensions of the connectors vary from vehicle to vehicle. The adapter can be in the form of a ribbed spacer with ribs that are less dense in line with the vehicle frame lengthwise members.
