A starting apparatus (1) for starting an engine has a drive motor (80) and a reduction gear (10). The reduction gear (10) includes a shock absorbing member (15) and restricting members (142,182). The shock absorbing member (15) is provided to elastically receive a reaction force exerted to an internal gear (149). The restricting members (142,182) are provided to restrict a compressed amount of the shock absorbing member (15) by making contact with each other. When bringing into contact with each other, the restricting members (142,182) make contact at the outside diameter portions (M) thereof. Accordingly, unpleasant noise generated during the operation of the starting apparatus (1) is reduced by the shock absorbing member (15). Further, the damage to respective parts is reduced.
