The assembly, especially a motor vehicle windscreen (11) fastened to the edge of an aperture in a body structure (13), is fixed in place with a strip (17) of a visco-elastic vibration damping material between the meeting surfaces of the windscreen and aperture surround. The vibration damping strip, made from a vulcanised or reticulated elastomer and designed to absorb vibrations at frequencies below 300 Hz, has at least one surface pre-coated with adhesive and at least one surface that has adhesive applied to it and the aperture surround to fix it in place. An additional layer of a vibration damping material can be incorporated in the windscreen itself.
