Extending step

A retractable unit has first (12) and second (14) separate segments that fit alongside each other in a direction of movement when the unit is assembled and form a bridging part when extended. First (16) and second (18) drive mechanisms with electric motors are assigned to the first and second separate segments so that each has its own drive.
