An air bearing (58) serves to support and cool the shaft (122) of the rotor (50). A compressor air inlet (62) receives air for the fan blades (54), which is then exhausted from the fan blades (54) out a compressor air outlet (66). An air flow path communicates air from the compressor air inlet (62) to the air bearing (58). An air filter (110) receives air from the compressor air inlet (62) and a valve (74) controls the flow of air through the air flow path and has an open position permitting air through the air flow path and a closed position restricting air to the path, wherein the valve (74) actuates based upon a predetermined amount of pressure from the compressor air outlet (66). The air filter (110) comprises a J-shaped tube.",
