Vehicle wing with breakable area

Source
The vehicle wing, made from a plastic such as a thermoplastic or thermosetting material, has a skin separating its inner and outer surfaces. The skin has a crumple zone that opens when subjected to an outward thrust from inside the wing, and an airbag adjacent to the crumple zone with its housing moulded from the same plastic as the wing. The skin is some 2mm thick, and has a groove some 1 mm wide adjacent to its upper edge forming a line of reduced resistance. In the event of an impact the wing crumple zone opens and deploys an airbag that reduces the risk of pedestrian injury.
