A method for the control of an electric power transmission network comprises the repeated execution of the steps of measuring measured variables (y) that represent electrical and other physical conditions of the network, representing the network as a mixed logical dynamic system model, said model comprising a continuous state (x), whose change is expressed as a function of measured variables (y), control variables (u), a discrete state (d, delta ), a model of the dynamic behaviour of the network, wherein the continuous state (x), is expressed as a first function of time (t), the continuous state (x), control variables (u), a discrete state (d, delta ), and continuous variables (z), and constraints on the operation of the network, executing a model predictive control method, based on said network representation, that determines a sequence of control values (u) for which a given cost function (JÄuÜ) is minimised, applying at least a first set of the sequence of control values (u) to the network.
