Operation of an exhaust gas sensor in an internal combustion engine exhaust involves control of the operating parameters of the sensor by use of model-based control and/or of exhaust gas-dependent pre-control. An Independent claim is also included for a device for controlling the operating parameters in the exhaust, the device being formed as a model-based control with structure determined by a model of the controlled system.
