A control device reads data from a data carrier for control purposes. The data carrier is associated with at least one actuator, such as a fuel injector, and contains data characterizing the actuator. Data are written into the data carrier by the control device via a data line, and/or data are read from the data carrier by the control device. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine.
