Passenger protection device

The restraint device has a reception container for an airbag (100) having an opening (110) covered by the seat covering (40) of the passenger seat, which is secured to a side wall of the reception container, so that the seat covering is ripped in the vicinity of the opening upon inflation of the airbag, e.g. along a tear seam (150).
