The electronic controller (1) receives data from other controllers (3) and/or from sensors and has an associated memory element (4) in which at least one data item fed to the controller is temporarily stored. The contents of the memory element are fed to the controller in the event of data communications failure and an emergency strategy of the controller can be carried out depending on the data. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of controlling an inventive electronic controller in a motor vehicle.
