The device has a housing and a shaft in the housing rotatable about its longitudinal axis, carrying a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel and mounted in magnetic radial bearings and at least one axial bearing. The bearings each have a bearing plate seated on the shaft and at least one stator opposing this axially so as to form a gap. At least one flow channel is formed in the housing via which at least one bearing gap is subjected to an air flow. The device has a housing and a shaft (2) in the housing rotatable about its longitudinal axis, carrying a turbine wheel (4) and a compressor wheel (3) and mounted in magnetic radial bearings (5,6) and at least one axial bearing (9). The bearings each have a bearing plate seated on the shaft and at least one stator opposing this axially so as to form a gap. At least one flow channel is formed in the housing via which at least one bearing gap is subjected to an air flow. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of cooling magnetic bearings in an inventive exhaust gas turbocharger.
