Protection device for a luggage compartment of a vehicle

The protective device (20) comprises a flexible band of material (21). This is held in a hidden, closed position, in a compressed form. This leaves the luggage compartment (10) access opening (13) fully open. During use, with the e.g. hatchback raised, the opening is at least partly covered by the material. Goods (32) in the compartment cannot fall out.
