Vehicle occupant protection device

An in-seat protection device in a motor vehicle comprises an air bag in the side edge of the roof which extends downwards on inflation to protect the occupant from the side window. The underside of the airbag is connected to an extended guide element (20) which moves with respect to the vehicle body on inflation.
