Tubular molecules based on single-wall carbon nanotubes

A tubular carbon molecule having the following structure: where is a substantially defect-free cylindrical graphene sheet (optionally doped with noncarbon atoms) having from about 10 2 to 10 6 carbon atoms; where is a hemispheric fullerene cap having at least six pentagons and the remainder hexagons; n is a number from 0 to 30; and R, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , and R 5 are specified substituents, wherein the tubular carbon molecule contains at least one of R, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , and R 5 .
