The safety belt mechanism includes a holding pocket (2) mounted on the pillar or inside wall along which the relaxed belt hangs when not in use. The pocket has two guide grooves (3) extending perpendicularly and facing each other with their groove openings (4). The distance between the groove openings corresponds roughly to the width of the belt (11) and the locking tongue (10) which is wider than the belt can be inserted from the upper ends forming insert openings (5) to the pocket up to stopping against a stop in the grooves. The tongue has at the top a slot (13) extending across the longitudinal extension of the belt and roughly the same length as the width of the belt which is guided through same.
