A process for forming an ionizable composition, the process comprising: contacting, at a temperature in the range of 0-85 DEG C, a composition comprising the functional group -(CF2CF2)n-SO2F, where n is 1 to 5, with a solution of an alkali metal salt, the pH of said solution not to exceed 13, for a period of time sufficient to obtain the degree of conversion desired to the alkali metal sulfonate form of the polymer.
