During an idling phase, fuel is repeatedly injected in a cycle. To attain stable combustion in the easiest way possible during idling, a first injection (E1) carried out during an intake cycle in the idling phase begins in a crank angle (KW) area between 0degrees and 70degrees, preferably between 20degrees and 70degrees after top dead center (LOT) for gas exchange.
