A cylinder block for constituting an engine such as a diesel engine, comprises a cylinder portion (31) housing a piston (33); and a skirt portion (32) covering a crankshaft (25). The skirt portion (32) is curved, and ribs (61,62) are formed on the inside of the skirt portion (32).
