The fuel cell stack consists of one or more PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cells (1) incorporating gas diffusion electrodes which are formed by the reaction and gas distribution layers (6, 7; 8, 9), and are compressed so that their thickness lies between 50 % and 85 % of its original value. Independent claims are also included for (a) a method for producing the proposed fuel cell stack (b) a gas distributor layer for PEM fuel cells; and (c) an electrically powered automobile with the proposed fuel cell stack
