Navigation device and navigation method using the navigation device

Method for navigating using a navigation device with a memory for storage of street map data in two formats: an overview map and detailed maps in a larger scale. Both maps are shown on a display simultaneously and a navigation computer and graphics control unit are used to control the movement of a detailed map as virtual cross wires are moved over the display. An Independent claim is made for a navigation unit with a display in which an enlarged map section can be moved over the detailed map in conjunction with the movement of virtual cross wires.
