The vehicle seat, and especially the rear seat in an automobile, has at least one adapter (27) for a change into a flat backrest for packages. It swings at its mounting (23,25), and can be detached from the automobile structure. In the event of a crash, the adapter and/or mounting can distort and/or partially fracture so that the locking unit (29) can move in relation to the locking rail (11).
