The system comprises an electrically driven pressure charging device (10) and an electronic control system (32) for controlling the operation of the pressure charging device (10). The electronic control system (32) calculates a desired air charge according to engine torque demand (120), and calculates one or more allowable operating limits to the operation of the pressure charging device (10) based on at least one operating parameter (110,122,125) of the air charge boosting system. The engine control system (32) then drives the pressure charging device (10) responsive to the desired air charge and within the calculated allowable operating limit.",
