An electro-hydraulic control block (3) has electric valves (4,6,7,8,9) which connect with the clutch jack (11), the gear selection jack (1) and the gear engagement jack (2) and control their operation by admission of oil under pressure from the pressure accumulator (13). If a fault occurs on any of the electric valves the system changes from automatic to manual allowing engagement of any accessible gear or if already in manual the system remains at manual
