The heater for a motor vehicle produces heat through fluid friction and has a working chamber (10) and a separate Pre-chamber (12) with feed and return openings to allow circulation of the fluid. The working chamber contains a motor driven rotor (7) defining a working gap with the chamber walls. The rotor is a bucket vane disc (8) rotor. The housing has a coolant chamber (19).
