A hydrodynamic retarder for a motor vehicle comprises a control circuit (1) having a hydraulic pump (11), heat exchanger (3), valve (4) and controller (2).The pump output volume is adjustable independently of the vehicle speed, drive shaft rotation or retarder rotation speeds.
