A method and apparatus for the liquefaction of natural gas are described. For reliable operation of the compressors present in natural gas liquefaction plants, it is proposed to obtain the energy for driving the compressors from the combustion of a portion of the liquefied natural gas (D1). In particular, gas turbines can be operated with evaporated (E1, E2) liquefied natural gas as fuel gas. In this way, fuel gas with homogeneous composition and constant calorific value is available, which is also suitable for modern gas turbines, which are sensitive to fluctuations in the composition and calorific value of the fuel gas.
