Impact absorber
DRIVE
October 2, 2002
The shock absorber for absorbing the energy of an oblique front impact comprises a metal tube (4) with peripheral grooves (5) which allow it to be compressed longitudinally. A mounting plate (6) at its base, at right angles to the axis of the tube, allows it to be attached to the chassis. The top (7) is closed and at an acute angle to the mounting plate, allowing it to be attached to the bumper. A line of weakness (10) below the surface can be compressed without affecting the rest of the shock absorber. An Independent claim is included for a similar shock absorber in which the top surface consists of a hemispherical cap.
