The self propelled rail locomotive has a drive compartment containing an electric motor (1) powered from a fixed supply network (2) or from a generator (4) driven by an internal combustion engine. The generator and engine can be attached to a mounting (5) which is detachable from the locomotive through a side opening (6) in the locomotive bodywork. The mounting can be inserted through a door opening in the bodywork.
