The steering column for a motor vehicle has a shaft with a front section (4) and a rear section (6) connected by gears (19). The front and rear sections have teeth which engage with a toothed connector (24). The teeth of the front section of the connector are offset angularly from the teeth (11) of the rear section. There is a fixed housing (16) to carry a central cushion (64) and hold it in position when the column rotates.
