A method and system for referencing locations in transport telematics

A method for referencing locations is used in a transport telematics context by effecting such referencing viz à viz an overall geographic context. In particular, a first road segment is designated by a service provider between two successive pivot points as providing a minimum weighted distance therebetween. Furthermore, any second road segment that is a disjoint alternative to the whole or a part of the first road segment gets assigned a weighted distance that is substantially greater. Preferably, such pivot points (72, 78, 86, 88) for one or more classes of major roads are located away from adjacent road junctions.
