Traction control device and process

The basis of an automatic control system for determining the need to counteract wheel slip by discharging sand is a fuzzy control system which determines four levels of weather conditions and relates them to the degree of slip recorded. Two ambient temperature levels are set, below 0 degrees C to indicate winter conditions and above summer conditions. Provision is also made for the locomotive driver to initiate sanding.
