Method of manufacturing a piston

The method involves forming at least one comparatively narrow groove (14) in the area of the upper and/or lower flank of the piston ring groove and filling the narrow groove with a wear-resistant material (16). The piston ring groove is then machined so that the upper and/or lower flank is formed at least in part by the wear-resistant material. The groove is preferably filled from a plasma or laser source.
