A shock absorber (4) for the lid and/or bottom region (3, 5) of a container (2) for the transport of radioactive material consists of a shock absorber housing (7) that can be bolted to the container end (3), with a recess (8) located on its inner side for the container end (3), with a metallic punch-through protection plate (9) arranged at a distance from the container end (3), and with a metallic shock absorber structure (10, 11) which in the region of the part overlapping the container end (3) consists of an angle ring with radial webs (10). The shock absorber housing (7) contains a non-metallic filling material. Optimal conditions for vertical and horizontal drop of the container (2) are provided when the shock absorber structure (10, 11) above the container end (3) consists of a stepped pyramid element (11) having the cross-sectional dimensions of the container (2) with wall thickness decreasing in steps toward the free outer side (12), and the shock absorber housing (7) is otherwise foamed with a plastic foam (14, 15).
